Sometimes an online journal, other times an informational website, a is the internet’s way of indulging opinionated writers and coaching curious readers. It’s a place within the online universe where individuals (or groups of them) may voice their thoughts and share them with millions.

is somewhat elusive, and the ways to describe it are numerous.

The most popular blogging niches tackle personal finance and development, health and fitness, beauty and fashion, and everyone’s favourite – food. Blogs can be deeply personal and introspective, resembling an online diary. When written by professional journalists, they possess enough power to influence business and politics.

There must be something mutual to all of them, right? Some universal characteristic in an otherwise multifarious world?

Ten characteristics of a blog

We’ve done some counting and ended up with ten main characteristics of a blog:

A common question about a blog is how it relates to a website – are these two essentially the same, or are there any differences between them? While websites are mainly presentational, blogs are always intended to engage. A website is therefore static, as opposed to a blog which must be dynamic.

The information offered by websites is presented on static pages, in a form of an evergreen content that doesn’t require any updates . Blog posts, on the other hand, are like diary entries; they include a publishing date and tags. New entries and regular updates are key for running any kind of blog.

Unlike with a personal diary written in a notebook, blog entries are displayed in reverse chronological order – the newest posts being on top. The latest ones push previously published ones down the list, until they completely disappear from the landing page. Older posts are usually archived on the following pages, but they can also be organized by the month or year when they were first published.

First comes a header with the menu or navigation bar to declutter the page and make a great first impression. It’s followed up by main content area on which blog posts appear either by order of publishing or by relevance. Down below are contact pages, privacy policies and relevant links, neatly arranged in a footer. A sidebar highlights favorite entries and displays social profiles and call-to-actions.

Learn how to correctly classify seven different types of workers with our simple guide.

Posted December 28, 2017 by Justworks in
Misclassifying employees as independent contractors is a serious issue that could cost your company money. Learn the penalties you need to avoid.

Employers and employees alike often face confusion regarding whether part-time or temporary workers should be classified as employees or independent contractors. One reader wrote to us with the following scenario:

I sit in a pod with 3 other full time employees doing the exact same work I'm doing. Company supplies a computer, a phone extension, an email address. I have to work 9 to 5:30 Monday through Friday, occasionally (sometimes often) staying late (at least I'm paid hourly). ... They had me sign a contract that said “I am not a full-time worker, company is not liable”, etc.

Was this individual really an independent contractor?

Well, an American Payroll Association instructor once told a class, “You can call a shark a guppy, but that won't stop him from biting you.”

Having a worker sign an agreement that states they are not an employee does not necessarily make it so. We've outlined below some of the key components of independent contractors.

Psst... We've built a comprehensive guide outlining all seven employee types. Download your free copy of the Cole Haan Mens Madison WP Cap Toe II Oxford Black XMDHj

What is an independent contractor?

This IRS publication provides a detailed explanation. The key element, however, is the amount of control an employer has over the worker.

Generally speaking, a company that contracts with an independent contractor tells the contractor what the scope of work is, but doesn’t have any control over how the contractor achieves the desired result. The contractor may use their own materials and have expenses that aren’t reimbursed.

The IRS has a 20-factor “right-to-control” test that is used to determine whether an individual is an employee or an independent contractor. Those are a lot of factors! But the IRS says that the facts that provide evidence of the degree of control and independence fall into three basic categories:

The DOL, the IRS, state government agencies and courts construe independent contractor status narrowly and impose large penalties for misclassification.

Depending on the employment law at issue, courts apply different tests to evaluate a worker's independent contractor status, and it may be possible to be an independent contractor under one test and an employee under another.

For example, the test to determine independent contractor status under federal tax law is not the same as the test applied under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) . Different tests may apply under state law.
